"House Speaker Paul Ryan, saying he was 'sickened' by Trump's comments, announced Friday night that the GOP presidential nominee would no longer attend a Republican event in Wisconsin..."

"... at which the two were slated to appear on Saturday. Trump's campaign said vice presidential nominee Mike Pence would represent him instead. Trump campaign advisers were huddling together in Trump Tower Friday night trying to figure out how to react."

How about withdrawing?

Why, it was only this morning that commenters on this blog were pushing for me and Meade to attend the rally tomorrow in Elkhorn. David Begley said:
Trump rally one hour from Althouse and Meade on Saturday. Wisconsin is critical for Trump and the Meadehouse endorsement is influential.
I joked:
So I could tip the nation, eh, Begley? After all this, it might depend on me.
Meade boosted my joke:
In a world... where Clinton corruption grew exponentially, there was one lady blogger...
David Begley leaned in:
Yes, Ann, selection of the next Leader of the Free World depends upon you and Wisconsin.

No pressure....

So will Pence pretend Trump never said this too, like he did to every charge directed a Trump at the VP debate? Trump should NOT drop out, he should see it to the bitter end.

No more "rooting for" Donald Trump, I guess, Ann. This is more damaging that the 47% stuff from Romney; it's so candid; so authentic and ugly.
It's funny--on advantage Trump had was a lack of a long political record that could be used against him. However, he has a fairly long history of being in the eye of the media--which has now ended up being more of a liability.
Although I doubt his candidacy will collapse or that his core supporters will leave, one would think this would be a decisive push away of most undecided voters.

I have to think people on here are joking. I have friends that have said worse things about women when talking among friends. This is pathetic. Paul Ryan is a worthless piece of shit. Why has Comey not been impeached yet? Why has Lynch not been held in contempt? Because the house leadership are cowards and useless.

Whenever someone tries to stop the Clintons a very damaging story circulates. Then that person is shoved aside and the Clinton corruption goes up a level higher and spreads the damage further. Back when the ugly stories were circulating about Paula Jones and Juanita Brodrick they were phrased in way that made people turn against those women. "Trailer park trash", who wants to defend someone like that? We can see now how people were being manipulated back then. Well, it's the same now. Essentially the Clintons are calling Trump "trailer park trash" (although I suppose it's "mens gymn trash"). And people don't want to be associated with someone like that. So the Clintons go up the last level and the corruption goes through the whole country. We'll easily be able to see how we were played just like the people of Arkansas were over Paula Jones when we sustain in our persons and see our loved ones sustain the damage the Clintons will do. We'll wonder why we couldn't see that what mattered was to stop the Clintons. We'll wonder why we couldn't see the real ugly story; why we allowed ourselves to be led blindly by a sudden media attack.

I finally just watched the video with audio.

Even more then the printed transcript, it came across as pure locker room banter and braggadocio on the tour bus about the seductive power of money and celebrity. Clearly not about assault.

So what did he do: he popped a tic-tac and when he got off the bus he kissed the pretty girl on the cheek -- only after Billy Bush urged them both to hug -- and then immediately mentioned his wife's name. He's all talk!

I'm not denying the political implications or Trump's lack of couth, but to say this video somehow unmasked Trump as some kind of sexual predator is ridiculous.

It may even win Trump the Tony Montana vote.

Okay, is there anyone here who has ever thought of supporting Trump who thought that Trump didn't say shit like this in private? Really?

I'll tell ya what: after they ask Trump about this at the next presser, why don't they ask Hillary what Bill & Jesse Jackson talked about in that "confessional" session Bill & Jesse had after Bill was exposed as doing unnatural acts with Monica Lewinsky. At the time of that session, Jesse Jackson was in the process of paying hush money from the charitable donations of Operation Push to a woman who was bearing his illegitimate, adulterous child. I somehow doubt the conversation involved time in a monastery or acts of mortification of the flesh for either man.

I'm sorry, any adult on this board who doesn't understand that horndog men glomm after pussy all the time, 24x7, & pursue it in the crudest terms possible, just hasn't ever met one. Sadly, two things are true: 1) such men are over-represented among those who would rule over us; indeed, I often think they rule over us to have access to the women & 2) far too many women are willing partners with such men.

How is that actually possible? In Wisconsin, for example, is there a method to replace the candidate on the ballot at this late date? If there is, how does that candidate get chosen, by the RNC? If Trump's name remains on the ballot because it is too late to remove his name, how do electors pledged to the replacement candidate get chosen as opposed to electors pledged to Trump? If Trump pledged electors get elected despite Trump's withdrawal, whom do they vote for when they meet on December, 19th?

These questions are discussed in a WAPO article from September. There is no clear answer to any of this. There is no federal or constitutional guidance and the laws of the states are probably inadequate, if they address the situation at all.

I wonder what Pence will say?

It's no longer possible to get Pence on the top of the ticket in most states, so it would still be Trump-Pence on the ballots. Then the electors would have to vote Pence rather than Trump.

So it's perfect. You can vote Trump as a protest vote, knowing that he is no longer in the running, but get Pence, conservative but restrained. This might be the best way to beat Hillary. And if that's the best way, she's he president either way.

Well, one possibility is that this is a move to keep Trump from bringing up the dirt on Bill at the debate. Another possibility is that this was timed to distract from the wikileaks business. A third possibility is that this was an attempt to smoke the closet #nevertrumpers out of the closet. In Ryan"s case, it worked. He already had the letter of condemnation ready in his mind. The only thing he added was the reason. If this is all they have, it's coming awfully early in the campaign, which leads me to believe reports that the Clinton campaign was in a panic. If there's more to this than just banter on a video tape, then this could be a problem. Otherwise, we already know that Trump and both of the Clintons are vulgarians. We no longer live in the world of W.C. Fields and the need for clever substitutes for vulgar words. If it's just words, it's probably just words. If women come forward with stories, that could be different.

Was Jaunita Broderick a 10 when Bill raped her? Was she a ten when Hillary sent her thugs after her to shut her up? What Kathleen Willey a 10 when Bill sexually assaulted her? Was she a 10 when Hillary called her another bimbo eruption? Or when her husband killed himself?

I know these are difficult questions for Hillary supporters. They kind of highlight your abject hypocrisy and total lack of a soul.

It's 30 days until the election now. The cake is baked; as someone here pointed out, it's all up to turnout now.

Now, all that all of Bernie Sanders supporters - a sizable portion of the Democrat electorate as of primary season - have to decide is one of three things.

- Not to vote for either Hillary or Trump

- Vote for the guy who said something a decade ago about grabbing pussy

- Vote for Hillary, whose emails with her campaign chair contain

*CLINTON SAYS YOU NEED TO HAVE A PRIVATE AND PUBLIC POSITION ON POLICY*
*CLINTON TALKS ABOUT HOLDING WALL STREET ACCOUNTABLE ONLY FOR POLITICAL REASONS*
*CLINTON SUGGESTS WALL STREET INSIDERS ARE WHAT IS NEEDED TO FIX WALL STREET*
*CLINTON ADMITS NEEDING WALL STREET FUNDING*
*CLINTON TOUTS HER RELATIONSHIP TO WALL STREET AS A SENATOR*

What hill will all those die-hard Bernie supporters ultimately choose to stand on? What drove them on and on all those many months?

Abstract chivalry and solidarity with feminism against rude male talk, or Wall Street?

Most people will not crucify someone for committing a thought crime. They will even forgive someone who repents for trans-human behaviors (e.g. abortionist, cannibal). In fact, they appreciate a separation of public and private spaces. And after constant flogging by transgender interests ("="), institutional discrimination by class diversitists, miscarriage of anti-native policies, and vulgar defenders of abortion rites, they will be rightly concerned about the Church's progressive corruption.

Walter,

He should have a game plan, like the HRC people do where four months ago it's decided what should roll out today and for every day until the election.

But, more important than his inexperience/inability running a campaign is his inexperience/inability running the government. Nobody can know that he'll automatically know how to run the government, especially after, to date, he's had HRC kick his ass during the campaign (and that's with the Russian government doing more than Nixon could have dreamed of to help DJT.)

themightypuck said...

I will concede that we learned nothing about DJT from these revelations but it doesn't matter. Google Ray Rice. He knocked out his wife in an elevator and everyone knew it, he admitted it, etc. Yet no one gave a fuck until tape came out. Human nature. Trump was toast anyway but this is dirt on the coffin. By the way, this doesn't bother me at all. I kind of hate it but know plenty of dudes who might have said the same thing. This is modern politics. The people get to choose and the people are not going to like this.

Quite aside from any defense of Trump, I personally hope he wins and shuts up the army of perpetually outraged moral narcissists who demand personal perfection of others but not themselves or their friends.

The essential argument being put forth here is that Trump is disqualified because he's boorish, while Hillary is okay despite all of her shady dealings and law breaking throughout her career because she says the right things in public and made sure to shred or seal as much of her words in private as possible. Why exactly am I supposed to prefer the fake Saint Hillary image over the realistic Dirty Donald?

Must be a different Navy than the one I was in, which was many years ago. I joined in 1960. Maybe the level of conversation has been raised since I got out in 1964. Similar barracks-flavored examples of Trump’s crude verbal meandering on the Access Hollywood tape were common in my Navy. Indeed, even worse. Perhaps that’s why I’m not shocked.

But if you have been imbued to the core of your being with political correctness as many of our elites have been this type of language and casually vulgar attitude toward sexual seduction(a failed attempt, BTW) and sexual harassment must be very significant. But these types were not going to vote for Trump, anyway. Heads can explode on all the cables but let’s wait for a bit to see the public’s reaction before we write Trump off completely.

grack,

They really weren't too crude. Plenty of sex. But not a lot of jabber behind the girls' backs that was a lot different than what we said to their faces. Maybe this was because we often had girlfriends around. But, even if they weren't, we'd jabber a little about what we were up to sexually, but none of us where too fixated on each others sex lives, that would have seemed sorta gay (not that there's anything wrong w/ that.)

They often went on and on about their guns and other gun related stuff. I was totally lost w/ that stuff.

Jon Ericson said...

No, I really think you need to find a more fabulous site to post at. Really.

Yancey Ward said...

Jon,

This video and audio will be playing non-stop until November. It really only needs to cost him 5% support to end any chance he had to win- it is that simple. The problem is the sheer crudity of the comments plays poorly with lots of people he needed to win.

Someone above asked what happens if he withdrew- I think the easiest solution is to simply keep him on the ballot where Pence can't be elevated and Trump removed. His electors in states he still wins don't have to vote for him and pledge to support the replacement. The main problem overall is the early voting- in states like that you will have to keep Trump on the ballot if you think he had a chance to win that state.

Jon Ericson said...

O.K. Yancey.

Yancey Ward said...

Althouse's vapors about this being admission of sexual assault were vastly overblown- nothing he said is such an admission. He may have grabbed the pussy from time to time, but that isn't what he said he did. In fact, I find the idea that he did pretty laughable- it really is probably an empty boast, if one can call it a boast in mixed company.

Jon Ericson said...

So. Is this how it ends?

Yancey Ward said...

Jon,

I don't think this should be a disqualifying thing- like I wrote, such crude talk among men isn't uncommon, and probably by the time you are 40-50 years old you have engaged in it if only passively with your friends and colleagues. Though I am not a woman, I can't imagine most women don't already know that the men they know and married have said similar things to other men, and if they don't, then their men are just very, very good at concealing that part of themselves.

But all that doesn't matter- the fact that it was taped is what is killing here for Trump's chances. It will keep a significant part of his support from voting for him now, if only to stay out of the doghouse.

Either you hung out with real wusses or real PC types. My friends and I never talked that way, but I sure heard it. In HS, graduated in 1973, in boot camp, throughout my Navy career, and from people I've worked with since leaving active duty. I generally don't get along well with people who talk like that, but avoiding them is just about impossible for the average male engaged in everyday life.

Professor Althouse: "If anyone was offended. Is there any chance that no one was offended?!"

Well, I have enjoyed reading the comments - all of them - and this has to be considered the most misguided question I have seen Professor Alhouse ask. And then, (I suppose it is forgivable since she probably wrote her last Criminal Law bar exam question many years ago) we have: "...Trump's statement — which is itself only words — is a confession to behavior...Criminal behavior. Sexual assault." A phone call to the local Criminal Law professor will quickly expose the fallacy of that conclusion.

Ken B said [in a comment here]:

" Eric
Althouse is misrepresenting what Trump said. He say women [consent?] let stars get away with stuff. When asked for an example of the sort of thing a star can get away with he said the grabbing thing. That is not the same as saying he did it. It might or might not suggest to you that he has done so, but it is not a reference to having done so."

My conclusion from all this is that Professor Althouse, like Geraldo Rivera on The Factor (Fox News) show, has exposed herself as being something other than a "neutral observer".

Is anyone too naïve to have the right to vote who does not realize that Bill Clinton, George Bush, John McCain, John Kerry, Jerry Ford, Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Harry Truman, and almost every husband, father and son has participated in similar conversations?

Yancey Ward said...

Well, if you want to know whether or not this hurts him, watch the LATimes tracking poll. That poll picked 3000 adults early on and continuously repolls them, and has remained more stable, less variance, than any other poll by a wide margin. I think 95%+ of the people who will end up showing up in the voting booth in November have already made up their mind, so I do believe the LATimes poll is accurately reflecting that reality, if not necessarily electorate's preferences overall. If Trump suddenly in the next two reporting cycles finds himself behind in that poll, you will have your answer about how this did or did not hurt him.

In a perfect world, what Trump said should weigh a great deal less than what Hillary herself has implicitly condoned in her own husband's behavior- I can't even imagine a person who could believe otherwise, but they obviously exist. However, the world isn't perfect.

Guys really do talk like that. Or, at least some of them. Two groups, essentially - working class down through the lower class, and a lot of alphas. Esp super-alphas like DJT and WJC (LBJ, JFK, etc). And, probably decently more often on the Dem side of the isle than the Rep side with politicians. Rep politicians have to deal with the family values types, while on the Dem side, alphas are just expected to be getting theirs on the side. Funny thing is that this sort of thing is used for intimidation by some alphas. Have had senior attorneys talk that way to me, and it always struck me as alpha posturing. They figure that they can use it to make you uncomfortable, so you had better be able to ignore it.

It was pretty shrewd to hold this until now. It looks to me to be a classist wedge issue. The upper middle class should get all upset about this and vote for the safely upper-middle class Crooked Hillary. The problem is that the rich, the elite, etc. have always operated like this, and the upper middle class, in particular, hates it. They see themselves the custodians of virtue, and standing against this Which is why hitting Crooked for her being able to skate on email is powerful there. They don't believe in double standards, and resent that the rich and powerful face a different standard than they do. Which is to say that this has now been structured so that they can virtue signal by rejecting Trump, and his elite class locker room talk. And, yes, there is another double standard here - everyone knows that Democrat politicians operate with a double standard, and that is one of the reasons that mainstream Republicans dislike them. Their politicians are not supposed to be that way, and that is part of why they are morally superior to Democrats, who accept this sort of thing as the norm.

Normally, Trump's point that BJC did worse at the golf course wouldn't fly in Republican circles (because, as noted, this is part of why Republicans think that they are morally superior to Democrats), but Trump's appeal is not really to the upper middle class that Republicans usually aim at, but rather, at the middle middle and lower middle class, where this sort of talk is much better accepted (and, esp. to traditional blue collar Democrats). So, Trump's best response may, indeeed, be that WJC has said far worse in his company, on multiple occasions, and that Clinton was still taking junkets to Pedophile Island with Epstein even a year or so ago (which, BTW (for Unknown) very different from publicly acknowledging Epstein in public, like Trump did - no evidence, yet, that Trump ever visited there). A grovelling apology wouldn't work, which is why Trump's natural response to hit back even harder may be his best response.

As for virtue signallling, Walker was pretty pathetic there. Made him look like a pansy, which may work with his primary constituency, but i think will, ultimately, act to reduce his base. What must be remembered here is that this sort of talk is really mostly looked down upon by the upper middle class, and those imitating them in order to join it. It doesn't bother the working class, and, instead, Walker just looks craven and weak.
