"Trump's 'great man' play on North Korea."

I just like the graphic. That and the fact that the writer (at Axios) has a name that is also a bird — Jonathan Livingston Seagull... I mean, Jonathan Swan.

Meade has this thing he does for fun here in Madison. We'll be walking down the lake path and just as someone is walking by, he'll say "The thing I love about Trump..." as if we're in the middle of a conversation. Just helping to keep Madison alive and vibrant. This post made me think of a new line to be spoken when someone passes by: "Trump is making me believe in the Great Man theory of history."

I'll bet there are a lot of people who'd prefer to see the NK talks fail than for it to become necessary to give Trump the Nobel Peace Prize.

Damn, now Democrats are worried about deficits and fossil fuel prices!

Trump really is reshaping America!

It won't be necessary. They gave it to Gorbachev all by himself for unilaterally ending the Cold War.

If the Koreas sign a peace treaty and the north denuclearizes, look for the Nobel to go to Xi Jinping.

Maybe, but if Trump wins the Nobel Peace Prize we in the northeast can heat our homes with so many liberals' hair on fire.

Plus, presumably that tax cut "wipe out" only counts the value of direct tax savings to certain taxpayers on the extreme of the incidence spectrum, not the fact that the tax cuts will benefit most and create more and better paying jobs that will lift overall living standards.

Moreover, right now it's difficult to blame Trump for higher oil prices except on the demand side -- more economic activity -- rather than the supply side which is the province of socialists like Obama and Chavez.

Petroleum prices are up because global demand is up, which because out there in the greater world it is good times. All sorts of people are living better.

Which is most likely to come crashing to a halt due to American political conflict. Stop it.

Nonapod said...

There's no way in hell Trump would ever be given the Nobel Peace prize. It's only given to the "right" people, good globalists, progressives, and socialists, like Yasser Arafat and Al Gore.

In the event that Trump succeeds where pretty much everyone else has failed, various people in the worldwide press, all the great thinkers, all the learned intellectuals would adopt a severe cognitive dissonance. The Nobel committee itself would also have to warp reality in their own minds. In order to cope with the mental strain of such an extreme dissonance, they'd probably end up giving the prize to someone like Kim Jung Un.

This is both stupid and fundamentally anti-democratic.

IMF says global growth will be fastest in 7years. 2018 - 2019 forecast is 3.9% - since the 2010-2011 recovery (which was not so good for the US - the rest of the world did better).

Explains petroleum prices.

Do not screw this up. Let Trump be Trump.

buwaya said...

One heart at a time, thats all we can hope for.

The US is the global economic engine and trouble here is more consequential than anywhere. Calm down, be less arrogant and think of all those poor people.

But since all liberals know that the tax cuts only benefit the rich, why would they care if those benefits were offset by gas prices?

This is also nonsense. The US outperformed the EU, the most comparable economic unit, throughout the recovery. Only in the last year has the EU outperformed the US.

Europe’s Economic Growth, Aided by France, Outpaces U.S.

I am, thinking or the poor people in the US saddled with trillion deficits for the foreseable future, thanks to Trump.

buwaya said...

The rest of the world, not just the EU.
The EU has almost always had lower growth than the US.
And the EU did not fall as hard, and quickly climbed back to their previous employment levels. Not the US.

Hmmm.
Trump was presented with a fait accompli on the budget by an alliance of his enemies, no? Your government is complex and has many factions, and your President has limited powers.

So I suggest reducing your enmity, and urge your chieftains to cooperate, that your President can reduce the budget in some sensible way.

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan said...

Again, you make no effort to validate basic facts. The EU GDP growth rate fell lower that the US in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The Great Recession was devastating for many EU economies. The economic difficulties of the EU was a major drag on the US economy over the entirety of Obama's tenure.

A veto on both the tax cuts and the budget were both possible and desirable. Trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see.

Why do you post such nonsense? As others mentioned upthread oil is up because demand is up and demand is up because the economy is up which wasn't the case during Obama's term. So would you prefer lower gas prices due to a basically stagnant economy paying higher taxes like you did under Obama? You make snide remarks about the deficit as if Hillary or any progressive will ever actually produce a balanced budget. So all you are arguing for is a weaker economy, higher spending and deficits and higher taxes.

High price of gas can't be a bad thing from the Progressive point of view, otherwise California would not have raised gas taxes, would they ?

Although I support Trump I doubt he will succeed in getting North Korea to actually denuclearize and eliminate its ballistic missile program. What else does the Kim Family Crime Ring have going for them? He saw what happened to Saddam Hussein and the Duck Of Death. And he saw his grandad and dad play us like a violin. So at this point it doesn't look to likely to actually work out positively.

On the other hand if it actually does work, Trump should not disrespect himself by accepting a Nobel Peace Prize. Any award given to the likes of an Arafat is an award no decent person would want to be conferred with.

DanTheMan said...
